Important specification note
Commercial Disodium EDTA is also commonly supplied as a dihydrate. The dihydrate has different identification:
Disodium EDTA Dihydrate
Formula: C₁₀H₁₄N₂Na₂O₈·2H₂O
Molecular Weight: 372.24 g/mol
CAS No.: 6381-92-6
Therefore, check your supplier COA before publishing the CAS number, formula and molecular weight. Do not mix the anhydrous and dihydrate specifications on one product page.
6. Product Description
Disodium EDTA is a water-soluble chelating agent widely used in cosmetic and personal-care formulations. Its main function is to bind polyvalent metal ions that may enter formulations through water, raw materials, processing equipment or packaging.
Trace metals such as iron and copper can contribute to undesirable changes in a formulation, including oxidation, discoloration, odor changes and reduced stability. By complexing these metal ions, Disodium EDTA can help protect the overall quality and stability of finished products.
Disodium EDTA is therefore commonly incorporated into skincare, cleansing, hair-care and other water-containing personal-care formulations as a supporting formulation ingredient.
7. Functions & Benefits
Chelating Agent — Binds metal ions present in the formulation.
Sequestering Agent — Helps reduce undesirable interactions caused by trace metals.
Supports Product Stability — Can help reduce metal-catalyzed deterioration of formulations.
Supports Color Stability — Helps reduce discoloration associated with certain trace-metal interactions.
Supports Oxidative Stability — Chelation of certain metal ions can reduce their ability to catalyze oxidation reactions.
Supports Preservation Systems — Can improve the effectiveness of some preservation systems by binding metal ions required by microorganisms; however, EDTA-2Na is not itself a complete preservative.
Water Quality Support — Helps manage trace metal ions introduced by process water or other raw materials.
8. Applications
Suitable for:
Face Cream • Lotion • Serum • Facial Cleanser • Toner • Body Wash • Shampoo • Conditioner • Hair-Care Products • Liquid Soap • Personal-Care Formulations
It can also be useful in other aqueous formulations where control of trace metal ions is desirable.
9. Storage
STORAGE
Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area in the original tightly closed container.
Protect from:
• Moisture
• Contamination
• Excessive heat
• Incompatible materials
Keep packaging properly sealed after opening.
Actual shelf life and storage requirements should follow the supplier’s COA/TDS/SDS.
10. Safety & Handling
SAFETY & HANDLING
For professional formulation and manufacturing use.
Avoid generating or inhaling excessive dust. Avoid contact with eyes and use appropriate workplace hygiene and personal protective equipment during bulk handling.
Refer to the supplier’s SDS for the specific commercial grade before industrial handling, storage or transport.
