DIMETHICONE

INCI Name: Dimethicone
Chemical Type: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), silicone polymer
CAS No.: 9006-65-9
Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid (viscosity-dependent)
Odor: Essentially odorless
Solubility: Insoluble in water
Function: Emollient • Skin-conditioning agent • Hair-conditioning agent • Slip/feel modifier • Antifoaming agent

Important: Dimethicone is a polymer, so do not present it like a small pure molecule with one fixed molecular weight. Its molecular weight and physical properties vary with polymer chain length and viscosity grade.

Benefits & functions

Dimethicone is widely used to improve the sensory characteristics of cosmetic formulations. It provides excellent slip and spreadability, contributes a smooth and silky after-feel, helps reduce tackiness and can improve combability and conditioning in hair-care products. It is suitable for a broad range of emulsions and anhydrous formulations.

Applications

Face Cream • Body Cream • Lotion • Moisturizer • Facial Serum • Hand Cream • Sunscreen Formulations • Primer • Foundation • Hair Conditioner • Hair Serum • Hair Mask • Personal Care

Formulation guidance

Phase: Generally oil/silicone phase
Processing: Can generally be incorporated during hot or cold processing depending on the formulation and grade.
Compatibility: Verify compatibility with the complete formulation, particularly when working with high silicone concentrations or specialized silicone systems.

Storage:

Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Follow the supplier’s SDS/TDS for the specific grade.
